Re: Margarita La Chaparrita Is My Mother

Hello Ms. Arredondo:

Thanks for your question regarding your mother’s music. Unfortunately, we don’t have information about her recording or performance rights. Normally, those are negotiated with the record companies and music publishers (for composers). But with some of these small, independent labels, official documents are hard to find.

The physical 45-rpm record – featuring “Te Sigo Amando” by Margarita La Chaparrita y su Conjunto on Chief Records – belongs to Chris Strachwitz of the Arhoolie Foundation. At UCLA, we post a digital copy of the recording with any available information and credits. We include an audio sample for the public limited to 60 seconds, to conform with applicable laws. The Frontera Collection is a joint project of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, the Arhoolie Foundation, and the UCLA Digital Library, made public as a library resource.

Please accept my condolences for your mother’s loss. It would be great if you could provide a photo of her for her page on our website. And if you have any biographical information about her and her career, I'd be happy to add a brief biography as well. I notice this disc was produced by Santiago Jimenez Jr., whose family figured prominently in the San Antonio scene.

Regards,

Agustín Gurza, Editor, The Frontera Collection

Margarita La Chaparrita is My Mother

de Db Arredondo (not verified), 05/10/2020 - 11:17

Hello. I am the daughter of Margarita La Chaparrita who sings on this record. My mother passed away 4 years ago. She never mentioned anything to me about your project or studies. Can you tell me who authorized the use of her name and music? Was she made aware that her name and music were being used for this? Looking forward to your response at the above e-mail address. Thank you.
